Hip Fractures / Hip Replacement

A very serious injury, hip fractures most always require surgical stabilization prior to any attempt at rehab. Fractures may be due to osteoporosis or disease, or they may occur as a result of a traumatic event such as a fall or auto accident. When fractures occur, a hip pinning or replacement is usually done. At other times, gradual wear and advancing arthritis may lead an individual to undergo a total joint replacement. Prognosis for recovery is generally very good and most patients make steady gains in functional movement of the hip, regaining strength and a safe return to most day to day activities within a few months. The specific methods and pace of therapy are dependent on the location of the fracture, amount of soft tissue damage, and the surgical procedure used to repair or replace the fractured bone.
