Rotator Cuff Tendonitis and Tears

The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles in the shoulder that assist in steering the ball of the shoulder joint in the socket. Rotator cuff tendonitis or impingement occurs when one or more of the tendons become irritated, either by a specific injury or overuse. A rotator cuff tear occurs from an injury that causes a specific tear or from long-term wear and tear on a tendon. Sometimes bone spurs from arthritis can fray a tendon, causing it to tear. Partial tears may improve with exercise. More significant tears may require surgery for the best functional outcome. Physical therapy is appropriate for all types of rotator cuff problems, including conservative management and post-surgery. Treatments include modalities to decrease pain and inflammation and exercises to increase range of motion and strength. If the injury is sports related, special programs are designed to include sports specific activities. This is crucial for the overhead athlete such as a pitcher in baseball or a tennis player.
