Scoliosis

Our back normally has four natural curves which alternate forward and back to allow normal movement in all directions. When an abnormal or excessive curvature is present especially as it is visible side to side, a scoliosis is present. Any curve greater than ten degrees is significant and can lead to further rotation of the trunk, difficulty with movement or breathing, or an apparent leg length discrepancy. Factors such as the amount of bend or rotation, the age of the patient, or recent changes in the amount of scoliosis are all important in determining the correct treatment approach. Your physical therapist can assist in pain management and instruct you in exercises to help maintain mobility and obtain improved muscle balance through your trunk.
