Torn Cartilage

Knee cartilage are C-shaped wedges located on the joint surface of the tibia (lower leg bone). The medial cartilage is C-shaped, whereas the lateral meniscus is more 0-shaped. Together, they help to even the load through the joint, absorb shock, assist in joint stability, guide the joint through normal motion, and assist in nutrition and lubrication of the joint. A tear in these structures impedes any of the above functions. To the patient, the knee will feel sore, unstable, and may click, catch, or even lock. Cartilage tears frequently require surgery for removal or repair of the damaged tissue. Follow-up physical therapy is essential to fully regain mobility, strength, and function through the involved joint.
